USPSA/IPSC

Practical pistol shooting is both exciting and challenging, as well as being one of the fastest growing shooting sports in the United States. Courses of fire utilize many aspects not found in other disciplines:

• Movement by the shooter
• Drawing from the holster
• Multiple targets
• Reloads
• Shooting through and/or around barricades
• Shooting strong hand, weak hand, and freestyle (both hands)

Practical pistol allows the shooter freedom to solve the problems presented by the match design. The stages in practical pistol utilize a basis of application in the defensive use of a firearm. Practical pistol matches are based on the principles of accuracy, power and speed. The matches are varied, with new courses of fire for every stage. Participation in these matches will develop a high degree of proficiency in the use of the handgun, as well as providing a great means of recreation. This approach is similar to, but not quite identical to that of the IDPA league.

SGC's approach to practical pistol matches will concentrate on the fundamentals of accuracy & speed. Our matches will present the shooter with numerous opportunities to practice the "standards" of practical pistol (ie. drawing from holster, table pickup, reloads, movement, shooting from various positions as well as shooting freestyle, strong hand and weak hand.)

As in any other recreational activity, there is virtually no limit to the amount you may spend on firearms and associated equipment. However, in order to get a solid start in practical pistol shooting, all that is required is a reliable handgun, a suitable holster, ammunition, eye and ear protection, and a big dose of enthusiasm. As your skill level increases, you may wish to advance to other equipment or add additional items that will aid you in competition. By competing in the Limited category, expenses can be kept minimal because only a few modifications are permitted on Limited guns. The minimum caliber is .38/9mm, with most competitors using .40 S&W or .45ACP in Limited Class and 38super in Open Class.

Additional information on this league can be found by visiting the USPSA web site.
