The State of Israel has been in constant strife since it's
creation on May 14th, 1948 when the British mandate over the
Palestine ended. The country quickly realized that it must develop
it's own reliable weapon which could be manufactured locally
using the resources available. By 1950 Major Uziel Gal of the
Israeli Army had designed this weapon which still bears his name.
The UZI utilizes the popular blowback system and is of simple
yet durable and very solid construction from heavy pressings
and heat-resistant plastic. The magazine is inserted through
the pistol grip, a novelty at the time; the reasoning behind
this was that when reloading at night or when weary it was deemed
easier to have the hands come together than to try to locate
a specific position along the gun.
The UZI comes in several variations, including a mini-UZI and
micro-UZI which have cyclic rates over 900 rpm due to their smaller
frames and were designed for ultra concealability.
